The Falcons survived a physical, grind-it-out first-round playoff test and advanced with a 60–45 victory over Carl Hayden in the opening round of the 5A state tournament.
From the outset, the game had a postseason edge. Carl Hayden pressured the ball, attacked the glass and looked to disrupt Catalina Foothills’ rhythm. The Falcons answered with composure, tightening up defensively and controlling the tempo to take a narrow halftime lead.
The second half turned into a battle of toughness. Catalina Foothills forced key turnovers and converted in transition, gradually stretching the margin. Timely perimeter shooting and strong finishes in traffic helped the Falcons create separation late in the fourth quarter.
Defensively, Catalina Foothills held Carl Hayden to limited second-chance opportunities down the stretch, sealing the win at the free-throw line in the final minutes.
